First Time Printer Setup

Open the box to find on top of the HP Envy 4520 All-in-one Printer the following:

A HP 123 Setup Black Ink Cartridge, a HP 123 Setup Tri- Colour Ink Cartridge, a software CD, a setup poster and a power cord. The HP Envy 4520 All-in-one Printer is designed to fit anywhere you want it to. Unpack the power cable that was included in the accessories, and plug it into the port on the rear of the printer and then plug the other end of the cord into a wall outlet. Turn on the printer by pressing the power button. To install the setup ink cartridges, open the ink cartridge access door. The right cartridge slot has been allotted to the black ink cartridge and the left slot has been allotted to the tri-color ink cartridge. Insert the setup cartridges into the respective slots, click them into place and then close the cartridge access door. Position the alignment page on the scanner glass, close the scanner lid and then press either the Start Copy Black button or the Start Copy Color button on the printer control panel to align the cartridges.

                               Install the Softwares and Drivers

  • Load the Software and drivers installation CD for both Mac and Windows included among the accessories of this printer on your computer and run the installer.
  • Follow the prompts on the screen to complete the printer installation process.
  • Alternatively, the Software and drivers for the HP Envy 4520 All-in-one Printer can also be downloaded from the official HP website.
  • The procedure to download the software and drivers online is as follows.
  • In the official HP website, enter in the search box the name of your printer along with its serial number and search. Select Software and Drivers and go to the software and driver results page.
  • Select the operating system that you use and its version from the drop-down lists and click Update.
  • Download the required drivers and software from the list of available Driver-product installation software compiled by HP and then install them.

Replace Ink Cartridges

  • Turn on the printer by pressing the power button and open the ink cartridge access door.
  • To remove the cartridge, press down on it until it is released from its slot.
  • Remove the packing material on the cartridges.
  • Make sure you do not touch the copper-colored contacts or nozzles while removing the protective strip of plastic.
  • For, touching them can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.
  • The right cartridge slot has been allotted to the black ink cartridge and the left slot has been allotted to the tri-color ink cartridge.
  • Insert the setup cartridges into the respective slots, click them into place and then close the cartridge access door.

Procedure to Resolve Print Quality Issues

Issues like missing black or color ink in the printed output, or the printed page is blank or has very little ink can be resolved as follows: Use genuine HP ink cartridges Check ink levels and replace ink cartridges that are critically low or empty To view the ink levels in Windows: With your printer turned on, click the name of your printer in the HP folder on your computer.

  • Click Maintain Your Printer and in the Device Services tab click Estimated Ink Levels.
  • To check ink levels in OS X: With your printer turned on, search the Mac for Print and select Print & Fax / Print & Scan /Printers & Scanners Click the name of your printer, and select Open Print Queue.
  • Open Printer Setup or Settings and click Click Open Printer Utility and select Supplies Status.
  • Clean the ink cartridges

In Windows:

With your printer turned on, click the name of your printer in the HP folder on your computer. Click Maintain Your Printer and in the Device Servicestab click Clean Ink Cartridges If the print quality of the test page is acceptable click ok. Else, click Second-level Clean.

In OS X:

With your printer turned on, search the Mac for Print and select Print & Scan Click the name of your printer, and select Open Print Queue. Click Open Printer Utility and select Clean Printheads. If the print quality of the test page is acceptable click Ok. Else, click Second-level Clean.

Identify the problem ink cartridge and replace it Review the test page and check to see if there are any defects in the black text and the colored blocks on the page to identify the defective cartridge and replace it. Contact HP Support if the print quality issues persist.

Printer is Offline(Mac)

  • If the connection has been established via a USB cable: Turn off the printer and disconnect the USB cable After a while, turn on the printer, reconnect the USB cable and try printing again.
  • If the connection established via a network Unplug the power cord from the router.
  • After a while replug it and wait for it to re-establish a connection to the internet service provider.
  • Restart your printer. On your Mac, click on the apple icon and go to system preferences.
  • In Printers and Scanners / Print and fax /Print and scan check to see if the name of your printer displayed under the printer’s list.
  • If it displayed, then the connection restored. 3. Power reset Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect it after a while and turn on the printer.
  • Stored values in the firmware are reset during the power reset.
  • Try printing again to see if the connection restored.
  • Disconnect all the 123.hp.com printers connected to your Mac except for the one you are trying to print from. Search the Mac for Print and select Print & Fax / Print & Scan /Printers & Scanners.
  • Disconnect the other printers and try printing using your printer as the default printer.
To restore the communication do as follows:
  • Create a new printing session Delete your printer from the printers list and then add it back.
  • Click Print using. If in the Use list your printer doesn’t show up, download the latest drivers and when your printer queue appears in the list try printing again.
  • Reset the printing system Select Reset Printing System by right-clicking in the printers list. Enter the administrator username and password, when prompted to confirm your choice. Note: Resetting the printing system deletes all the devices in the print queue.
  • Add your 123.hp.com/Envy 4520 printer back to the list and try printing.
  • If your printer is connected to a guest or host network and then reconnect to your own network.
  • Connect your printer to another Mac and try printing to see if the problem persists.
  • If your wireless router supports multicasting, enable it and retry printing.
  • Go to Advanced Network Settings on your printer control panel and then disable the IPv6 setting.
  • Connect using the IP Address In the IP tab, enter your printer’s IP address in the address field.
  • Select HP Jetdirect- Socket next to protocol. If in the Use field, your printer appears, add it and try printing again.

Printer  Offline(Windows)

  • If the connection has been established via a USB cable: Turn OFF the 123.hp.com/Envy 4520 printer and disconnect the USB cable and turn on the printer, reconnect the USB cable and try printing again.
  • If the connection established via a network Unplug the power cord from the router.

  • In Printers and Scanners / Print and fax /Print and scan check to see if the name of your printer is displayed under the printer’s list.

Resolving Printing Scanning And Printer Issues Using HP Print & Scan Doctor(Windows)

Note: The HP Print and Scan Doctor free tool downloaded online supported for Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP.

  • Confirm that your printer connected, turned ON and listed in the start menu.
  • If not listed, open HP Print and Scan Doctor, click My product not listed.
  • Select your printer, click Retry Select your connection type, follow the instructions on the screen and then click Retry. Select either Fix Printing or Fix Scanning.
Note: A white checkmark indicates that the printer passed the tests. A white wrench indicates that Print and Scan Doctor found an issue and repaired it.
  • Yellow exclamation indicates test print failed and that user action required but the step  skipped.
  • On-screen instructions to resolve the issue if a red X  displayed.
  • HP Print and Scan Doctor can also  used to test the status of the printer spooler, print queue, device manager, device conflicts, driver check, Windows (WIA) Scan, HP Twain Scan, and HP Scan.
  • Additional tools, features of HP Print and Scan Doctor: Click Printer Supply Ink Levels to view the estimated ink or toner levels and cartridge details such as install dates, warranty dates, and serial numbers.
  • Click Printer advanced Printer Data to view information of your printer model, serial number, firmware, software versions, page count, warranty status, and printhead information, Click Printer Services to print, Print quality diagnostics page, align the printhead and print a printer diagnostic page.
  • Printer Advanced Info to view the printer’s IP address, Mac address, signal strength, connection, network, and security types.
  • Printer Network to troubleshoot Firewall issues such as not able to print, the printer not found on the network, or the printer status display, disconnected or offline, even though the printer connected to the network.
  • Click Printer Web services and click ePrint Instruction Page to view ePrint information.
  • Web Services information page prints which contain instructions on setting up your printer with HP Connected. Input your printer’s claim code and add your printer to the Devices tab in HP Connected.

Print Jobs Stuck Print on Queue(Mac)

Listed below are solutions to troubleshoot this issue:

  • Resolve any problems with the hardware like a paper jam or a carriage jam and try printing again.
  • Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and computer and reconnect it after 10 seconds.
  • Confirm that you didn’t accidentally plug into the Ethernet port before you try to print again.
  • Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cables before you turn off the router and the printer.
  • Turn ON again and try print. In the Apple, menu go to System Preferences and click Printers and Scanners.
  • Remove any extra entries/ multiple printer queues that might exist for your printer, leaving only one that matches your printer and try printing again.
  • In the Printers list, delete the existing print queue for your printer.
  • Click Add, Print Using, and then select the name of your printer.
  • Try printing again after a new printer queue displays in the Printers list in an idle status.
  • Confirm that the printer is receiving power if not connect it to another outlet.
  • If the power button not lit, turn OFF the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord, and after a minute, reconnect it back firmly to the printer.
  • Press the power button to turn it ON if the printer doesn’t turn ON by itself and then try printing again.
  • Select Reset Printing System by right-clicking in the printers list.

Print Jobs Stuck Print on Queue(Windows)

Listed below are solutions to troubleshoot this issue:

  • Resolve any problems with the hardware like a paper jam or a carriage jam and try printing again.
  • Delete files created in Windows, whenever a print job sent to the printer.
  • Search for MSC from the Start menu, select Printer Spooler from the services lists, click Restart the service or click the restart button and then try printing again.
  • Confirm that the printer is receiving power if not connect it to another outlet.
  • If the power button not lit, turn off the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord, and after a minute, reconnect it back firmly to the printer.
  • Press the power button to turn it on if the printer doesn’t turn on by itself and then try printing again
  • Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and computer and reconnect it after 10 seconds.
  • Confirm that you didn’t accidentally plug into the Ethernet port before you try to print again.
  • Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  • In the print queue window uncheck both Pause Printing and Use Printer before you try printing again.
  • Go to Devices and Printers on the Control Panel, right on your printer, select Set as Default Printer and try printing again Uninstall the printer driver and software from your computer and then download and install the latest full feature driver and software from HP website or install it from the printer installation disk.
  • Right click on your printer in Devices and Printers and then click Remove Device.
  • Detect any issues in the system files of the Windows Spooler service by running the System File Checker.
